MediaTek launches first MmWave modem M80 5G

MediaTek introduced M80 5G modem, the first mmWave modem.

The first M80 MmWave modem MediaTek has just launched. MediaTek’s M80 is the first 5G mmWave-capable modem. A maximum speeds of 7.67 Gbps downlink and uplink of 3.76 Gbps can be achieved by this modem. This M80 modem comes integrated with a single chip of mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G technologies. Therefore, It supports the sub-6 flavor of 5G, but it’s mmWave that sets it apart from previous M70 modem.

MediaTek M80: Capabilities

The M80 Modem offers dual 5G SIM, dual 5G NSA and SA networks, and dual Voice over New Radio (VoNR). This modem supports dual SIM operation. Here, both SIM cards can connect to NSA or SA networks. Using the capabilities of modem, both SIM can do calls using Voice over New Radio (VoNR). Certain Networks which are without 5G dedicated bands will have dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) available.

MediaTek M80 will succeed Helio M70, launched in last year’s Dimensity 1000 series processors. MediaTek M70 is going to be the first 5G modem of the company, promoting sub-6GHz technology but without mmWave 5G standard. In the meanwhile, MediaTek M80 5G supports dual connectivity and dual carrier aggregation, both sub-6 GHz and mmWave.

“Besides accelerated 5G rollouts, mmWave technology is becoming increasingly important. Especially in the U.S., MediaTek’s new 5G modem comes with support for both sub-6 GHz and mmWave networks. Thus, allowing opportunities for the device makers and giving more flexibility,” said JC Hsu, Corporate VP & GM, MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit

He also added, “To improve users’ 5G experiences, these new modems will support the latest global cellular standards and specifications.  It also packs MediaTek’s signature power savings technologies along with ultra-fast speeds.” Also Read: Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G launching soon in India
