Apple Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California. It is the world’s largest technology company by revenue, with US$394.3 billion in 2022 revenue. Apple is also the world’s biggest company by market capitalization.

Apple was founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. The company’s first product was the Apple I personal computer. The Apple II, released in 1977, became a best seller and one of the first mass-produced microcomputers.

Apple Inc. went public in 1980 and introduced the Macintosh computer in 1984. The Macintosh was the first personal computer to use a graphical user interface (GUI).

In 1985, Steve Jobs left Apple and founded NeXT. He returned to Apple in 1997 and led the company to renewed success with products such as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Apple was on the brink of bankruptcy in the 1990s as it lost market share to the lower-priced duopoly of the Microsoft Windows operating system on Intel-powered PC clones.

In 1997, Steve Jobs returned to Apple Inc. after the company bought NeXT, his previous company. Jobs quickly turned things around, introducing the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad to critical acclaim. He also launched the “Think different” campaign and other memorable advertising campaigns, opened the Apple Store retail chain, and acquired numerous companies to broaden the company’s product portfolio.

Under Jobs’ leadership, Apple became a trillion-dollar company. He is considered one of the most influential entrepreneurs of all time.
