Google announced the satellite communication feature in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The tech giant also shared a teaser showcasing a Google Pixel 10 Series device receiving a WhatsApp call while connected via satellite. Google also confirmed that the Pixel 10 Series will start receiving support for WhatsApp Audio and Video Calls via Satellite Network from August 28. The date matches the first availability of the company’s latest flagship smartphones.

As noted, with this feature, one can make WhatsApp voice or video calls via satellite when the Pixel phone has no cellular or Wi-Fi network. This service could be a lifesaver, allowing users to stay connected on WhatsApp even without regular networks. WhatsApp satellite calling feature in Pixel 10 series: Details

Google shared a demo on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing the Pixel 10 handling a WhatsApp call with a satellite icon visible in the status bar. The clip showed that users can answer calls without depending on mobile networks or internet connectivity, extending beyond just emergency use cases. With this demo video, the tech giant clarifies how this feature works on Google Pixel 10 Series. While receiving a WhatsApp call over a satellite network, a satellite icon will show up in the status bar. WhatsApp calls will work exactly like before. Users answer voice and video calls the same way they always have. The only difference happens behind the scenes.

Instead of using your regular cellular or Wi-Fi connection, the call travels through satellite networks. Users won’t notice any change in how they make or receive calls. The satellite connection kicks in automatically when needed. This means WhatsApp Audio and Video calls will works even in remote areas without cell service. Terms and Conditions for Satellite Calling Feature

Google has also clarified about some terms and conditions for this feature to work. As per Google Pixel team, some terms and conditions will be applicable. The service will work in regions and through carriers that support satellite connectivity. Furthermore, the Google Pixel 10 Series users may incur additional charges for utilizing the satellite calling feature on WhatsApp.

This means the availability and cost of WhatsApp satellite calls will depend entirely on both the device being used and the specific carrier’s participation in the satellite connectivity program. Further, additional charges may be incurred for using this feature. Send Text Messages via Satellite

In addition, the satellite calling feature will work only outdoors with a clear line of sight to the sky. Performance may be slower than traditional mobile networks due to satellite limitations. With the introduction of WhatsApp Audio and Video Calls via satellite feature, the Google Pixel 10 Series become the first smartphone lineup in the world to support satellite-based WhatsApp calls.

Currently, there is no official information on whether WhatsApp will allow you to send text messages via satellite. By far, it is possible to send messages using satellite-based communication on select smartphones. This feature works when there is no cellular network or Wi-Fi connectivity. This puts Google Pixel phones ahead of the competition. Apple still restricts satellite features to emergency situations only. iPhones can only send SOS messages when a user is in danger. Samsung takes a different approach with the Galaxy S25. Their satellite messaging works through Snapdragon Satellite technology. But Samsung limits this to text messages only.

Google’s solution offers much more flexibility. The Google Pixel 10 Series users get full communication capabilities via satellite. Google plans to launch this service in the United States first. American users will get access before anyone else. The rollout will happen gradually across different regions. India might see this feature in the coming years. But there’s a catch for Indian users. Local mobile carriers need to support the technology first. Google can’t launch without carrier partnerships. Indian telecom companies must upgrade their systems. This process takes time and significant investment. The Satellite calling update follows the Google’s recent update regarding Maps and Find My Hub. As per the company, Google Pixel 10 series users can share their location through Find Hub or Google Maps using satellite-based sharing. Google’s collaboration with non-terrestrial network operator Skylo makes this feature possible. With WhatsApp calling, Google appears to be pushing the Pixel 10 into mainstream satellite-powered communication.

Satellite Connectivity on Pixel Watch 4 LTE

Apart from Google Pixel 10 Series, the Pixel Watch 4 LTE models will also be receiving satellite connectivity support. This will be the first wearable device to have support a direct satellite access. Google Pixel 10 Series Supports Wireless Charging Upgrades

Other than satellite calling, the Google Pixel 10 series also supports the Qi2 wireless charging. However, the Pixel 10 Pro XL offers Qi 2.2 with magnetic alignment and up to 25W charging. Additionally, the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are limited to Qi 2.0.1. This older version, introduced in 2023, still supports 15W wireless charging and is compatible with existing Qi chargers.

With WhatsApp calls over satellite, the Pixel 10 series enhances communication in areas with poor or no network coverage, while Qi2 support improves wireless charging efficiency. Together, these features make the Google Pixel 10 series a notable advancement in both connectivity and convenience for Android users.
