Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro: First Impressions
The new gaming phone, ROG Phone 6 Pro, launched alongside the ROG Phone 6. The rest of the specs and features remain the same on both the ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 6 Pro. Now, let’s get a sneak peek at the all-new Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro.
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 on Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro
The ROG Phone 6 Pro is the first smartphone to launch in India with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. On paper, this processor is a better option than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. But in reality, it is not supposed to be more potent than the 8 Gen 1. However, Qualcomm claims that the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is more power efficient. Power efficiency is the primary factor when selecting a gaming smartphone.

Also, to remember, Asus has also upgraded the cooling system in the newer ROG Phone 6 Pro model. The latest Pro and non-Pro model have the optional Aero Active Cooler 6. The Taiwanese tech giant claims that this cooling system will allow users to play games for a longer duration without having to deal with overheating or performance throttling. Talking about the design, the Taiwanese tech giant follows the similar design pattern we have already seen with the Asus ROG Phone 5 series. The newer ROG Phone 6 Pro still gets a massive chunk of glass and metal with similar dimensions. The unique model weighs 239 grams and is 10.3mm thick. Even with a heavyweight, the handset feels quite handy.
IPX4 ratings on new Asus ROG Phone
The IPX4 ratings for splash resistance will protect the gaming smartphone against liquids. We have already seen the company’s protection against water on the other premium gaming smartphones, and the same water resistance certification applies to the standard Asus ROG Phone 6. Top-notch Display on Asus ROG Gaming Phone
Despite of massive display on the Asus ROG Phone 6, the smartphone comes with nearly the same specs as its predecessor. Although, there are a few key upgrades, such as a higher refresh rate and an increase in the touch sampling rate by up to 720Hz. The massive 6.78-inch display comes with an AMOLED screen with Full-HD+ resolution. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protect the display on the Asus ROG handset. Asus claims this display can reach a peak brightness of up to 800 nits in normal conditions.
Regarding our experience with ROG Phone 6 Pro, the display looks stunning with punchy colours. The touch response is excellent, and the haptic feedback is excellent. We tried to play a few games on the Pro variant, and the games ran very well, as expected. Also Read – Asus ROG Phone 5 design, specs, model number and other details
ROG Vision PMOLED display
The latest Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro gets a ROG Vision OLED display on the back of the handset. This display can showcase preloaded animations for events like incoming calls, charging, other notifications, etc. The smartphone’s rear side is also peppered with gaming motifs like inscriptions and graphics. We believe these design changes are necessary to add more tastefulness to the handset. However, these design changes are not over the top compared to the early generations of the ROG Phone.
ROG UI Skin on the gaming smartphone
The gaming smartphone’s main highlights are the software customisations and the other hardware features. The all-new Asus ROG Phone 6 runs on Android 12. Furthermore, users can select between the Zen UI and the more gaming-oriented ROG UI Skin. During the online launch, the Taiwanese company promised to offer two major OS updates and at least two years of monthly security updates on the Asus ROG 6 series phones.
Side USB Type-C port on ROG Phone 6 Series
Both the ROG Phone 6 series handsets get an additional USB Type-C port on the left side of the frame. This port will also help in charging. The side port will also help in charging so that the charging cable does not get in the way while holding the phone during long gaming sessions. Furthermore, this port is also useful to offer power to the Aero Active Cooler 6.
Upgraded camera system
This time the Taiwanese tech giant has upgraded the camera system on the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro. Meanwhile, the triple rear camera setup is headlined by a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera sensor. Although, this primary camera does not offer Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) feature. The secondary camera is a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5MP macro lens. Additionally, the latest Pro variant comes with a 12MP Sony IMX663 selfie camera at the front.
The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro also comes with the usual shooting modes. The latest ROG Phone 6 Pro offers premium features like 8K Video recording. In our experience, the camera performance is not up to the mark. Since it is a gaming smartphone, camera performance is not the sector that is getting the top priority. Hence, anyone looking for a camera-centric smartphone should reconsider using the ROG Phone 6 Pro. Even though Asus has tried to offer better sensors instead of simply reusing the sensors present in the previous models.
Massive 6000mAh battery on Asus ROG Phone 6 series
The all-new Asus ROG Phone 6 packs a massive 6000mAh battery, a combination of dual 3000mAh batteries. This battery also comes with up to 65W fast charging solution. The Taiwanese tech giant has its 65W fast charger, but this isn’t coming inside the retail box—instead, the Indian retail unit ships with a 30W charger.
According to Asus, any USB PD 3.0 charger with PPS (Programmable Power Supply) and the appropriate power should also be able to charge the ROG Phone 6 Pro fully. However, one of the premium features of Wireless Charging is still missing on this Pro variant.
Asus Armoury Crate App
The ROG Phone 6 Pro boasts two Super Linear Speakers on either end of the body, which is rather loud. As for the gaming features, the Asus Armoury Crate app also offers many customisation options for an individual gamer. Furthermore, this app will allow gamers to monitor the CPU and GPU temperature. It will also modify the lighting and tweak the functionality of AirTriggers or the Ultrasonic buttons.
Remember, these Ultrasonic buttons are on the right side of the frame. Furthermore, these Ultrasonic buttons also get new functionality. Now, with a “Press and lift” gesture on these Ultrasonic buttons, the user can perform two actions within a game with a single gesture. Furthermore, the Armoury Crate app also allows the setting up of the type of cooling.
Asus Game Genie
The in-game dashboard, Game Genie, has also been redesigned. Now, this gaming dashboard can also be accessed simply by the swipe-down gesture. Meanwhile, this menu allows you to change various options, including altering the refresh rate, disabling alerts, activating X-Mode, and much more.
Asus Aero Active Cooler 6
This time, the Taiwanese tech giant sells the Asus Accessories separately. The Aero Active Cooler 6 is one such accessory that is sold separately. Meanwhile, it now includes a thermoelectric cooling system which is based on Peltier Chip. Asus also claims that it can reduce the surface temperature of the phone by up to 25 degrees Celsius with the “Frozen” Cooling Mode.
The Asus Aero Active Cooler 6 also has four additional buttons, which can be programmed within certain games. Remember, this new Cooler will work only with the Asus ROG Phone series and is also not backwards compatible. Hence, we cannot use this Cooler with the older models.
Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro: Final Verdict
Overall, the latest Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro is a beast of smartphones. It will follow the Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro’s footsteps and take the ROG Phone legacy further. The Taiwanese tech giant confirms that the Asus ROG Phone 5 series will continue to be marketed in India. So, buyers will have a more affordable option over the other gaming smartphones. However, the new ROG Phone Pro is worth the upgrade over the previous generation.
