iPhone 17 Air to Feature Titanium Frame

In the previous generations, the regular iPhones tend to use aluminium frames, while the Pro models get the more durable titanium frames. However, this time Apple is reportedly making an unexpected design shift by reserving the premium titanium build for just one of its upcoming iPhone 17 models. According to analyst Jeff Pu from equity research firm GF Securities, iPhone 17 Air, which is likely to launch as the successor to last year’s iPhone 16 Plus, will arrive with a Titanium frame. While, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max models will reportedly launch with an Aluminium frame. This means that the new iPhone 17 Air will be the sole model in the lineup to feature titanium.

Since the iPhone 15 Pro launch, we have been seeing the titanium chassis from two generations. The use of titanium makes the iPhone’s design a standout feature. To answer this question, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that titanium is not going anywhere, at least for this year. It was highlighted that the new iPhone Air could become the sole bearer of the titanium chassis. The ultra-slim smartphone is likely to feature a titanium-aluminium alloy metal frame. On the other side, few analyst believes that aluminium is lighter compared to Titanium. Furthermore, aluminium could have been a better choice. Reporting further, Kuo noted that titanium is not being scrapped entirely. Instead it will make an appearance exclusively on the new iPhone 17 Air. According to Kuo, the device will sport a titanium-aluminium alloy metal frame, with a lower percentage of titanium than the current Pro and Pro Max metal frames. This confirms a hybrid construction for iPhone 17 Air. Thus, retaining the premium feel while possibly reducing costs or weight. No Titanium for iPhone 17 Pro Models

Analyst Jeff Pu confirms the report from Kuo in his latest research note. According to a MacRumors report, Pu stated that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models could feature the aluminium frames. This would make the iPhone 17 Air the only model in the lineup likely to use titanium.

Traditionally, Apple has used titanium as a hallmark of its ‘Pro’ devices. Apple used a Titanium frame for its iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models. According to 9to5Mac, the titanium aluminium alloy move is surprising. With this the iPhone Air variant is likely to be a lower-cost model. Yet, the device will feature a more premium build than the higher-end Pro and Pro Max devices. 9to5Mac also explains that the use of titanium on the iPhone 17 Air will help to reduce weight.

In other reports, experts also confirmed that unlike previous models, this year’s iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will opt for aluminium frames. Similar will be the case with the vanilla iPhone 17 model. Ever since the launch of the iPhone X, Apple has preferred using stainless steel or titanium frames on its more expensive models.
