Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4: Performance Profile
With the addition of One UI 4.1.1 on the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, the South Korean tech giant has created a new Performance profile for the foldable smartphone. This feature can be accessed by digging deep into the Settings app on the Galaxy Z Fold4. This Performance Profile feature gets two distinct profiles – Standard and Light. These new profiles seem to replace the earlier ones.
How to access Performance Profile?
The new profiles can be accessed by Settings > Battery and Device Care > Battery > More Battery Settings > Enhanced processing. The enhanced processing mode will enhance the overall processing of the foldable smartphone. Also Read – New Foldable phones at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event; confirmed for July 26
The new performance profiles found in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 models give users the option of “Standard” processing, which according to Samsung, is recommended for a balance of performance and battery life, or “Light” processing. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4: First Impressions
Last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 was a sold offering from the South Korean tech giant. The foldable smartphone tick marks all the important points like ergonomics, battery life, camera, and especially the decent enough premium pricing. This year the tech major has launched the successor to this Galaxy Fold 3 in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.
The newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 brings improvements, especially in the battery and the camera department. Along with this, the company has this time to upgrade the processor on the latest foldable smartphone. These little changes bring improvements and offer a better user experience. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Design
Starting with the design, it is difficult for me to find any major difference between the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and the older siblings at first glance. Looking carefully at the Galaxy Z Fold4, I can say that the newly launched foldable is slightly shorter and wider when unfolding. It gets the aluminum frame which is flat with thin beveled edges.
The new Galaxy Z Fold is slightly slimmer and weighs 263 grams. This time the South Korean tech giant has made subtle design changes around the USB port on the latest Galaxy Z Fold4. The positioning of the ports, buttons, and antenna bands are the same as the Fold 3. Also Read – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 launch and price details in India, new Samsung foldable phone
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the latest premium flagship foldable smartphone. It comes with a bit lighter and slimmer profile. The aluminum frame makes it relatively comfortable to hold for longer durations. The back panel gets a matte finish and does not pick up fingerprints.
New Hinge Mechanism
This time Samsung has tried to lower the weight of the newly launched foldable smartphone. The design profile of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is slightly smaller. It can be because of the new hinge mechanism, which behaves exactly like the one on the Fold 3 smartphone. Samsung Galaxy Fold4 uses a more compact hinge mechanism that completely relies on linear motion.
Despite this improved mechanism, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 retains a wedge form when folded, which means a gap between the two parts and the seam where the display folds are still visible. Also Read – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 colors including Silver colour
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Display
The outer display on the latest Samsung Galaxy Fold4 is the same 6.2-inches in size. It comes with HD+ screen resolution with a higher pixel density of 402ppi. To recall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a pixel density of 387ppi, which is on the lower side. Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy Fold4 supports a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate which drops to as low as 48Hz on my unit.
Outer Screen
For screen protection, the South Korean tech giant uses the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ for scratches and shatter protection. This time there is no pre-applied screen guard on the Galaxy Z Fold4. Although, there was one on Fold 3. Both the displays on the Galaxy Z Fold4 are adequately bright. I did not notice any viewing issues while using outdoors in harsh sunlight.
The color saturation is top-notch on both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 display. The outer display is highly responsive. Although, with a taller profile, the typing experience still feels cramped. The folding display on the Galaxy Z Fold4 takes multitasking to the next level. The software is fluid and lets us easily switch between multiple apps. Thus, making it easy to customize our workflow. Internal Screen
Talking about the internal display, the inner folding display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is the same as the one on last year’s model. Here, the internal display measures 7.6-inches. Although, the resolution on the Samsung Galaxy Fold4 display is a bit different. The Fold4 gets a screen resolution of 2176*1812 pixels. This is due to the slightly wider aspect ratio.
This year, the South Korean tech giant has used ultra-thin glass on the latest Galaxy Z Fold4. In my usage, the glass used is still fragile. It can easily pick up the superficial dents even with slight pressure from the fingernail. Luckily, we get an under-display camera on the folding screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. Other Updates
It is the same 4MP sensor we have already seen on Fold 3. Meanwhile, the South Korean tech giant has tweaked the layout of the inner display pixels over the camera so that the camera lens is less visible in the UI. In my experience, I did notice some pixelation against the bright background. Now, the inner display comes with a variable refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Software experience
The newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the first ever Samsung device to boot on the Android 12L, which is an Android 12 version for large display foldable devices and other tablets. One of the key highlighting features of this Android version is the new taskbar. On opening any new app on the inner display of the foldable smartphone, we first notice that the first row of icons from the bottom of the home screen gets shrunken. This row of icons is pinned to the bottom of the display.
It will allow us to quickly open any other app in split-screen mode or as a floating window. The previously opened apps will also remain pinned at the bottom. FYI, we can have as many as eight apps pinned to the bottom taskbar. To get any other app opened, we have to close the app first. Interestingly, this taskbar can be disabled if we want. Moreover, we can also hide the taskbar with a long-press gesture.
One UI 4.1.1 on the Galaxy Z Fold4
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 runs on the One UI 4.1.1 skin. It works similarly to what we have already experienced on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The UI comes with many additional features. Here, the ‘cover screen mirroring’ feature allows you to duplicate the app layout from the cover screen to the folding screen.
Moreover, we can also choose which apps can continue running on the cover screen after folding the smartphone. In my experience, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 offers an excellent always-on display feature. The foldable smartphone also gets a good selection of downloadable themes and wallpapers.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Performance and Battery Life
The latest flagship Qualcomm chipset bumps the performance of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. While testing for the benchmark scores, the Galaxy Z Fold4 posted a score of 949145 points on the AnTuTu benchmarking app. It can easily reach a 60+ FPS frame rate on the GFX Bench graphic tests.
In my experience, the device did not get hot compared to the Galaxy Fold 3 during intensive gaming sessions or while using the camera app. The stereo speakers on the Fold4 smartphone are adequately loud. The sound system enhances the large-screen gaming experience with a bigger inner display. While playing graphic-intensive games like CoD: Mobile, BGMI, and Asphalt, we noticed a steady frame rate and excellent touch response.
Battery Life
With the more efficient processor, the battery life of the Galaxy Z Fold4 has improved drastically. We played an HD video on loop for over 15 hours on the inner display. Even with regular usage, the device can easily last you for the entire day; before going to bed, we have to charge the device. I tried charging this foldable smartphone with a standard 45W USB-PD charger. In my testing, the Galaxy Z Fold4 charges up to 47 percent in 30 minutes. At the same time, it took an hour to reach 85 percent. The smartphone charges from 0 to 100 percent in 1 hour and 21 minutes.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 Camera
The all-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 gets a big upgrade regarding two rear cameras. The main camera is now a 50MP sensor that uses pixel-binning technology and saves 12MP shots by default. The primary camera also gets optical image stabilization (OIS) and a wide f/1.8 aperture lens. Furthermore, it also supports 8K video recording, which was missing from the predecessor.
Telephoto Lens
The secondary camera sensor is a telephoto camera that gets a 10MP sensor. This is a downgrade from the 12MP secondary sensor on the Galaxy Fold 3. Even with the 10MP telephoto lens, the Galaxy Z Fold4 gets a higher 3X optical and 30X digital zoom range.
Ultra-Wide Camera
The third camera is an ultra-wide sensor which is still a 12MP shooter. The downer of this ultra-wide camera is that there is no autofocus. Therefore, macro photography is not possible with this lens. The two selfie cameras get the 10MP sensor on the cover and the 4MP sensor on the folding screen. These are similar to what we have already seen on the Galaxy Fold 3.
Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 Camera Review
The all-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is capable of clicking more realistic colors in broad daylight situations. The colors on the image are more natural compared to the predecessor, Galaxy Z Fold 3. In landscape shots, the details of the distant objects were also sharper. All this is possible because of the new higher resolution image sensor on the Galaxy Z Fold4.
1. Close-up shots
The close-up shots taken with the Z Fold4 also come out very well. In my experience, I noticed that the depth effect becomes too aggressive in some situations. Therefore, I suggest keeping enough distance from the subject. This will help click some decent close-up shots with stunning details and focus.
2. Night Shots
The Night mode on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 automatically kicks as soon we shoot in the night or low-light situation. With the Night Mode on, the Galaxy Z Fold4 can capture some stunning photos. The exposure is very good, even in low-light situations. The details in the images clicked are slightly better when compared with the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
The low-light shots taken with the newly launched Galaxy Fold4 also look stunning. These shots come out with good dynamic range and exposure, all thanks to the excellent Night Mode on the handset.
3. Ultra-Wide Shots
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 can also click ultra-wide shots. These images come out with great exposure. In some cases, the dynamic range becomes a bit inadequate. In most situations, I found that the predecessor, Fold 3, captured better details during daylight.
Telephoto Camera on Galaxy Fold4
The telephoto camera on the Fold4 smartphone can click some excellent details even at the native optical zoom level in daylight conditions. In my experience, the details in the photos remain strong till 10x magnification. Going Beyond brings pixelating and blurry effects to the images.
In low-light mode, the camera can click well-detailed images when the phone’s primary camera is used to 3x digital zoom. The output images appear to be still sharp and well-detailed. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 cannot click beyond 10x magnification using a telephoto lens and Night Mode.
Selfie Camera on Galaxy Fold4
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 gets two selfie cameras. Here, the selfie camera on the cover screen can capture some decent-looking shots during daytime and low-light conditions. Night Mode is also present during low-light situations to take care of the blurry and grainy effects. The under-display camera on the inner screen is one of the weakest points of this foldable smartphone.
In my experience, it feels a little awkward while taking selfies from the inner display camera. Like the Galaxy Fold 3, we can use the rear cameras to click selfies. The outer display will act as the viewfinder while clicking selfies. The rear camera can offer better quality and detailed selfies using the main or the ultra-wide-angle camera.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Video Quality
Samsung Galaxy Fold4 could be an excellent choice for video recording. It can record 8k videos at a 24fps frame rate. During the daytime, the 8k videos at 24fps look good. The videos were well stabilized. Although, the video output appears to be a bit jittery while walking during the nighttime. This could be a little distracting to the eyes.
If you want better output during nighttime, I suggest you shoot 4K videos at a 30fps frame rate. The video output is good; the video quality is excellent. The jittery effect is too low to be noticed with 4K videos. The best part of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is that we can easily switch between the main, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens at any resolution while recording. Additionally, the selfie camera on the cover screen can record video at up to 4K resolution at a 30fps frame rate.
Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 Connectivity
The latest flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC powers the newly launched foldable Samsung Galaxy Fold4. This foldable mobile phone comes with 16 5G bands support. Additionally, the phone sports two physical SIMs; we can use one Physical SIM and another eSIM.
In terms of wireless options, the Galaxy Fold4 includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC with Samsung Pay, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB). Similarly, there are all the necessary onboard sensors. Additionally, a capacitive fingerprint sensor is embedded inside the power button for device security. The fingerprint scanner works perfectly fine.
Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 Battery
The all-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 comes with a 4400mAh capacity battery. This is the same capacity battery as present on the predecessor, Galaxy Z Fold 3. The latest Samsung foldable handset supports up to 25W Fast charging. Additionally, we also get wireless and reverse wireless charging support. Regarding safety, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is IPX8 rated for dust and water resistance.
Other Features
The under-display selfie camera also works perfectly while face recognition. The image quality while video calls are also good enough. The folding display on the newly launched Fold4 smartphone also works fine with the Samsung S Pen. This S Pen comes with up to 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity.
The all-new Samsung S Pen also gets additional features like Air View, Screen-off memo, etc. Remember, this Samsung S Pen needs to be purchased and carried separately as there is no space to store the S-Pen on the foldable smartphone.
Final Verdict
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is one of the best successor foldable smartphones. It comes with good iterations over the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The newly launched foldable comes with a power-efficient chipset, improved primary and telephoto cameras, and better battery life. With so many good features, the smartphone still feels chunky.
The folding display needs to be handled carefully as it is more fragile than a regular smartphone display. The increased price might affect your budget with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. The bigger display on the foldable smartphone feels more practical than the iPhone 13 Pro Max display.
