The Instagram app, owned by Facebook, is rolling out some new updates for its Instagram Lite app in India. Instagram Lite app is getting a new update which is likely to bring Reels short video feature within the app. With this latest update, The company is claiming that India is the first country where this Reels feature will be available to all the users on this Lite app.
Reels on Instagram Lite:
As the name suggest, Instagram Lite is the toned-down version of the regular Instagram app. To recall, Instagram Lite app started its testing in India in December 2020. This lite version comes with an app size of less than 2MB. This toned-down version was design to provide lightweight experience to the users. Now, the latest update will allow users to watch Reels, the popular short video content.
This Reels feature was previously available the regular Instagram app. However, now this feature has landed to the lite version of Instagram app. During its testing period, This Reels feature was not available on the Lite app. Also, There were many other features including Shopping, IGTV etc. were absent during testing period. Also Read: Redmi India deletes tweet over display selection for Redmi Note 10 series
To recall, India was among the first countries to get this Reels feature on the regular app in July 2020. This feature was introduced following the TikTok ban by the Government of India. In July 2020, Reels was introduced to substitute TikTok in India. Remember, TikTok was also offering similar short video content on its platform.
How to access Reels on Instagram Lite?
To access the Reels feature on Instagram Lite app, simply go to Google Play Store and update this app to the newest version. Steps to access Instagram Reels,
- Visit “Google Play Store“
- Search for “Instagram Lite” on Search Tab
- Tap on “Update” option

There are many features that still differentiate the lite app from its regular version. The lite app does not feature dark theme option. There is no way to access dark theme feature on Instagram Lite app. The IGTV feature is also missing on the lite version of this app. To recall, On Instagram Lite, all the uploaded video content will be playable in a standard format. There is no dynamic grid on Instagram Lite app. However, The Lite app features the explore button at the bottom, just like the previous versions of regular app.
In India, The Instagram Reels app is available in multiple regional languages. These regional languages includes Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati and Malayalam. The company also promises to expand this feature for other markets in coming months. Instagram also promises to add other new features to both lite and regular apps in coming days.
