OnePlus 11 5G Review: A nearly perfect Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 smartphone

OnePlus is one of the most popular mobile phone companies across global countries. Recently, the company launched its next flagship series in India. The all-new OnePlus 11 5G comes in a standard OnePlus-styled big Red box. The retail box contains all the usual stuff, like a user manual, a OnePlus USB C cable for Charging and data transfer, and an appropriate 100W-rated fast charger. The One plus charging cable is different compared to last year’s OnePlus 10 Pro.

OnePlus 11 5G Design

Design-wise, the OnePlus 11 5G looks quite similar to the last year’s flagship OnePlus model. However, there are some noticeable changes as well. These changes are mainly related to the camera bump design. The new camera module gets a square-shaped island that transits into the side frame. It has a chromed-out stainless steel bump sitting below the camera ring. The rest of the back panel remains clean and minimal.

OnePlus update the new camera module design on the latest 11 5G. This design is inspired by classic sports cars and Swiss watches. Besides, the OnePlus 11 5G also gets an official IP64 rating. The OnePlus 11 Back panel also gets Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The curved back panel design helps to achieve a smooth and sleek appearance. In terms of dimensions, the handset is 8.5mm thick. Overall, the handset doesn’t feel hefty. It weighs 205 grams which are standard for a 6.7-inch mobile phone.

• Front Panel

Along with the Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the back, the OnePlus 11 5G also gets Gorilla Glass Victus protection on the front. The side frame gets chromed aluminum. The front display is curved. Thus, giving a premium look to the smartphone. To recall, the predecessor OnePlus 10T, got a flat display.

The curved display on the OnePlus 11 is inspired by the OnePlus 10 Pro launched in 2022. The OnePlus 11 gets more premium looks with the small punch-hole selfie camera and minimal bezels. • Buttons and Ports

The power button and volume button sit on opposite edges. Most of the time, I took unwanted screenshots while locking the device. The bottom edge is reserved for the loudspeaker grille, USB Type-C port, and SIM Card Tray. The secondary speaker sits behind the earpiece grille on the top. Furthermore, the top and bottom parts of the frame are flat with curved edges.

Overall, OnePlus brings minor design upgrades to the latest OnePlus 11 5G smartphone. The company followed the standard design trend with the latest flagship smartphone. It has made the big device feel thin and light in hand. It’s your choice to decide whether you liked the new camera bump on the back. The OnePlus 11 design could be subjective to most users.

AMOLED Display on OnePlus 11 5G Smartphone

OnePlus 11 5G features an upgraded 6.7-inch Third Generation LTPO AMOLED display. This panel comes with 1440*3216 pixels resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The latest generation LTPO offers improved energy efficiency. It offers smart features like allowing the display to recognize certain types of content. Furthermore, it also adjusts the refresh rate. For instance, while reading an E-book, it lowers the tone and adjusts the refresh rate to 1 or 10Hz. While gaming, it boosts the refresh rate to 120Hz.

• Brightness

OnePlus 11 5G smartphone comes with upgraded display technology when compared to the 10 Pro. It offers better HDR capabilities. However, it fails to impress me in the brightness test. During my testing, the maximum manual brightness I got was 495 nits.

With Auto mode, the brightness boosts to up to 788 nits. The company advertises that the maximum peak brightness can reach above 800 nits. • HDR and Color Accuracy

The OnePlus manufacturer is still trying to offer a proper HDR feature to its display. The color accuracy on OnePlus 11 5G is undoubtedly the best. • Refresh Rate

Just like the OnePlus 10 Pro, the refresh rate of the OnePlus 11 is highly adaptive. When the display is idle with static content, the refresh rate drops to 1, 5, or 10Hz, depending on the brightness levels. As the brightness levels go up, the refresh rate goes down. Similar behavior is expected from the LTPO OLED display panels.

Similarly, the moving object will trigger a higher refresh rate. The built-in Video Player will cap the refresh rate to 60Hz. Moreover, depending on the video, the system can also drop the refresh rate to 30Hz to match the video’s frame rate. For instance, 24fps videos can be still played at a 30Hz refresh rate. Moreover, depending on the content, the system will adjust the touch response rate.

• OnePlus 11 Negatives

There are negatives, like the OnePlus 10 Pro issue with the variable refresh rate. The same issue is back on the OnePlus 11. On the OnePlus 11, the display sometimes can’t decide whether to scale down or ramp up the refresh rate. During my testing, I also felt some scrolling issues and video stuttering at times. A similar issue is also experienced on Instagram and Facebook.

Another issue was when I played a certain 60fps video on the YouTube app. The screen becomes less responsive. It required multiple taps to bring in the video controls. Even, the pause button works with a little delay. This issue can be annoying for most users. With such issues, App crashes are also possible. OnePlus 11 5G Battery

The newly launched OnePlus 11 offers exceptional battery backup. Even though the battery capacity is just 5000mAh. But, the smartphone still manages to offer a decent battery life. When OnePlus 11 is placed against competitors, the battery life is parring for the course. Most of the competing flagships offer a similar battery life.

• Charging Speeds

The Charging speeds on the OnePlus 11 are fast. In just 22 minutes, you can expect your smartphone to charge from 0 to 100 percent full. It is possible because of the presence of 100W fast wired Charging. There is almost no rival brand to overtake the OnePlus 11 regarding Charging speed.

The last year’s Xiaomi 12 Pro is the only handset in the list which stands above the OnePlus 11 in terms of charging speed. The Xiaomi 12 Pro can charge the smartphone from 0 to 100 percent in just 21 minutes. Although, this lead is just by one minute. Looking at the predecessor, the OnePlus 11 can charge 10 minutes faster than last year’s OnePlus 10 Pro. This is quite an achievement in the context of fast Charging in under 30 minutes.

OnePlus 11 5G Audio

OnePlus 11 5G gets the usual set of dual stereo speakers. One of the speakers’ fires at the bottom. While the other speaker doubles as an earpiece. Overall, the loudness and sound quality are excellent. In my experience, the latest OnePlus 11 5G has borrowed the 10 Pro’s speakers. There is nothing bad about the audio system on the latest flagship smartphone. The sound quality of the OnePlus 11 Speaker system is quite clean and clear.

The company has tailored the speaker system more towards the vocals, movies, and podcasts. Even at higher volumes, the sound quality remains clean. Although, the bass levels are poor. This issue is more prominent at higher volume levels. This speaker system will likely attract users looking for a more balanced and neutral sound. OnePlus 11 5G Smartphone with OxygenOS 13

The all-new OnePlus 11 runs on the latest version of Google Android OS. OnePlus flagship smartphone boots on OnePlus Android 13 OS with OxygenOS 13 Skin on top. Remember, this new OxygenOS 13 is different from the OxygenOS we used to love. After the OnePlus Oppo merger, the new OxygenOS is identical to the ColorOS, despite Oppo’s assertion that OxygenOS primarily targets the worldwide market. But, still, both custom skin appears to carry identical features.

Looking at the new OxygenOS, it seems like the ColorOS is running on the OnePlus smartphones in China, Europe, India, and the US. Considering the hard-to-spot similarities between ColorOS and OxygenOS, both are indeed the same operating system. With the new OyxgenOS skin, OnePlus fans will be deeply disappointed. It is because the company promised to revert OxygenOS and rather bring back the original clean interface.

In spite, the company sprinkled the new skin with some additional features. At the same time, the good news is that ColorOS has come a long way since its first version. Oxygen OS 13 Features

Coming to the features of Oxygen OS, the overall appearance and icons have been completely revamped. The complete look and iconography look similar to the one on Realme UI 4.0 and ColorOS 13. Similar to the stock Android, the size of the notification shade has been enlarged with rounded rectangles. Now, the notification card is almost identical to the Stock Android. The icons have been simplified on OxygenOS. Although, the customization options are usually on the latest OxygenOS 13. These customization options include wallpapers, fonts, icons, accent colors, quick toggles, fingerprint animation, Always-on-Display, etc.

• Always-on-Display

• Home screen and Lock Screen

The home screen and lock screen offer some new features with the latest OnePlus OS version. The icon pull-down gesture is particularly useful on big-screen devices like OnePlus 11. In OxygenOS 13 skin, OnePlus removed the swipe-and-hold gesture from the Home screen. This option would send the search bar directly to the app drawer. It is one of the most useful features.

• Dolby Atmos Compatibility

While OnePlus is the source of Dolby Atmos compatibility, the new version of Android 13 supports Spatial Audio. The newer OnePlus OS now comes with more notification-related options. The status bar icons, the banners that appear above other apps, and the notification cards on the Lock screen can all be customized. Extremely fascinating is the reduced notification feedback when using a full-screen app.

The notification tone is more subdued, and the vibration strength is reduced. Furthermore, the banner on the top of the full-screen app is simplified. Unfortunately, OnePlus update does not offer any customization options with the physical alert slider. I remember that OnePlus offered some basic options like Ring, Vibrate, and Silent. Overall, OnePlus Oxygen OS 13 works exceptionally well in day-to-day life. The latest custom skin is very fast, snappy, and highly reliable. I did encounter some problems. But, these issues can be resolved with future updates.

OnePlus 11 5G Performance

The latest OnePlus 11 5G smartphone is powered by the new flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. This chipset is the top-of-the-line chipset for high-end Android smartphones in 2023. The newer chipset will offer 35 percent higher performance.

With Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the CPU efficiency has been improved by 40 percent. Furthermore, with Adreno 730 GPU, the performance and efficiency bump by 25 percent and 45 percent, respectively. OnePlus 11 5G comes with a RAM-Vita feature. It will accelerate every layer of RAM allocation, sometimes by closing current cached tasks and clearing up the room for more immediate tasks. With the RAM-Vita feature, AI-related tasks are served with priority. It can use up to 1GB of RAM.

• Benchmark Scores

In combined AnTuTu and other benchmarking tests, the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performed exceptionally well. Although, it still wasn’t capable enough to dethrone the Red Magic 8 Pro in AnTuTu benchmarking test. However, the OnePlus 11 fell behind many other handsets on the on-screen test. It could be because the OnePlus smartphone has to render everything in 1440p instead of 1080p. The smartphone outperformed its predecessor, OnePlus 10 Pro 5G.

• Cooling System

The cooling system design on OnePlus 11 is termed as Cryo-Velocity VC Cooling. The new cooling system has some upgrades over last year’s handset. As the name suggests, this Cryo-Velocity VC Cooling system uses a passive Vapor Chamber cooling. With the new structural design of the heat dissipation system, OnePlus has now managed to improve the heat dissipation capabilities of the system by up to 92 percent.

The cooling system uses a larger VC surface and leverages a mid-frame layer of graphene. This layer of new crystal-graphene material improves the heat dissipation towards the display. With this cooling system, OnePlus 11 handles a prolonged heavy workload easily. In the CPU stress test, the device maintained at least 74 percent of its performance at the end of an hour-long test.

It is unrealistic to believe that OnePlus 11 5G could offer full performance for such a long period. The biggest part is that there is no big fluctuation in performance. Henceforth, you can expect a smooth and steady performance during long gaming sessions.

• HyperBoost Engine

The OnePlus manufacturer have also implemented a new HyperBoost Engine. It aims to optimize the gaming experience while balancing performance and power consumption. During the launch event, OnePlus claimed that the device would constantly monitor what was happening on the screen. Furthermore, it will make adjustments in the performance when needed.

For instance, while graphic-intensive tasks, the HyperBoost Engine may boost the GPU and tone it down in scenes where not much is happening. Overall, while playing graphic-intensive games like Genshin Impact, CoD: Mobile, PUBG Mobile, etc., I did not notice any hiccups, everything ran smoothly.

OnePlus 11 5G Camera Review

The camera hardware on the latest OnePlus 5G smartphone differs greatly from the OnePlus 11 Pro. The OnePlus 11 Camera substantially upgrades over last year’s OnePlus 10T. The main camera comes with a highly popular 50MP Sony IMX890 sensor. It is paired with optically stabilized 24mm leans and an f/1.8 aperture.

• Secondary Telephoto Lens

The secondary camera is a telephoto lens with a 32MP Sony IMX709 RGBQ sensor. This telephoto sensor is coupled with an f/2.0 aperture. Furthermore, it gets a 48mm lens with 2x optical zoom. Chinese smartphone makers are marketing this camera as a portrait-centric sensor with an amazing bokeh effect.

• Ultrawide Shooter

The ultra-wide shooter is a 48MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. It offers a 115-degree FoV (Filed Of View). Moreover, this third sensor also supports autofocus. It can also be used for close-up and macro stills. All the cameras are Hasselblad branded. They come with Hasselblad color calibration.

• Selfie Camera

OnePlus 11 5G burrows the selfie camera from the OnePlus 10T. The selfie camera is a 16MP shooter with an f/2.4 aperture. Compared to OnePlus 10 Pro, the OnePlus 11 Camera setup is a clear downgrade. Here, the main camera sensor is smaller; the ultrawide sensor is inferior to the small Field Of View. The telephoto camera is also a downgrade, now 2x instead of 3x. Besides these downgrades, the OnePlus 11 has a more versatile and potent camera setup.

OnePlus 11 Camera App

Hasselblad branding gives the camera app an orange shutter release button on the latest OnePlus 11. It is the same as found on the latest Realme and Oppo smartphones. Swiping on the viewfinder will bring different modes. Additional modes are found under the “More” sub-menu. Furthermore, there are options to rearrange these modes as per your liking.

• General Settings

The General Settings Menu can be accessed by clicking the three-dot button in the upper right corner of the viewfinder. Furthermore, there is also an option from where you can switch off the automatic Macro detection. The Camera app also gets a dedicated Night Mode. Furthermore, this Night Mode can also be found under the Photo Mode.

• Night Mode

With Night Mode On, the camera app does take a second or two to capture and stack the photos. To get an accurate shot, you might need stable hands. OnePlus 11 5G also gets a tripod mode within the Night Mode. It can be used for long exposure shots for better results.

• Pro Mode

OnePlus 11 5G also offers Pro Mode support for all four cameras. This mode has full control over the usual stuff like ISO, exposure, White Balance, manual focus, and shutter speed. This mode also gets focus peaking and histogram to help users while clicking photos.

• Movie Mode

Movie Mode is another option that is available for video capturing. Besides this, there is a way to enable advanced stabilization, HDR, a LOG option for wider dynamic Range, ISO, shutter speed, and histogram. These features work on all three rear cameras.

OnePlus 11 Camera Quality

With pixel binning, the OnePlus 11 main camera can capture 12.5MP shots. These shots from the OnePlus 11 can offer accurate and pleasantly vivid colors. The details on these stills are well-processed. I can barely notice any noise in the resulting shots. Sharpness is also well-balanced. Moreover, the post-processing is kept to a minimum. Overall, resulting shots come with less noise.

• Primary Camera in Daylight

In Daylight shots, the dark areas look dark where appropriate. The under-exposed shadows result in higher contrast. It gives the Hasselblad Cameras a more expressive and dramatic look. Dynamic range is great in images clicked with bright backgrounds. It means that the backlit subject looked great.

• 50MP shots in Daylight

I made no difference between the shots with the AI toggle on, even with close inspection. The main camera can be switched to full-resolution mode from the viewfinder. With full resolution mode, the main camera can take native 50MP shots. These 50MP shots are an upscaled version of 12.5MP shots. Furthermore, it offers fewer details and more grit. I would not recommend you switch to this mode.

• Pro Mode in Daylight

Like the OnePlus 10 Pro, the Pro Mode also produces realistic images with less saturation. The output image offers the same colors as in the Auto Mode. Moreover, the Pro mode does produce images with slightly darker exposure and less noise. But these effects can be observed after you zoom in on the shots.

• 2X Telephoto camera

The dedicated 2X Telephoto lens on OnePlus 11 can take some excellent shots. The output shots come with plenty of detail and pleasant sharpness. Dynamic Range and exposure levels are consistent with those of the main camera. The contrast levels are deep on this telephoto lens.

I did notice one complaint with this telephoto lens on the OnePlus 11 5G smartphone. With faraway textures, I noticed some moiré effects. This problem occurs with the telephoto lens only; the main and ultrawide cameras produced none. The White Balance is slightly away from the main camera, though negligible.

• Ultrawide Camera

The Ultrawide camera on OnePlus 11 can shoot excellent shots. The sensor does a decent job by capturing the details with plenty of sharpness. Although, I did notice some grains in close-up-looking shots. The overall image quality looks decent and does not compromise with details.

Furthermore, the white balance is slightly inconsistent compared to the main camera. These slight differences can be a deal breaker for some users. The ultrawide can also capture photographs at the full 48MP resolution of the sensor, unlike the telephoto. Here also, the full-res photos will be upscaled like the main camera. The 48MP images turn out to look softer with fewer details.

• Macro Shots

When you move close enough to the subject, the camera app automatically switches the ultrawide camera to Macro Mode. This automatic detection can be turned off; it works well. The overall macro image quality is great. These images produce natural colors with plenty of details.

• Low-light Image Quality

The OnePlus 11 5G cameras are so intelligent that they automatically detect the shooting mode – Photo Mode or Night Mode. Even in the output shots, there is no difference between both modes. Regardless, you can get some excellent shots even in low-light conditions from the OnePlus 11 smartphone. The output images offer a great dynamic range, excellent exposure, sharpness, and low noise.

• 2X Telephoto lens in Low-Light

Here, the low-light shots in 2x mode were automatically shot as Night photos. With a 2X telephoto sensor, there is almost no difference between the Night Mode or Photo mode shot. Although, the output comes with a limitation as well. The OnePlus 5G software update forces to crop the image clicked from the main camera.

Using the telephoto camera is more favorable in low-lighting conditions. The resulting image did not retain as many details as in 1x mode in low light. In some cases, the output image turned out to be over-sharpened. The colors are pleasing to the eyes. Moreover, the exposure is also accurate. Although, shadows and highlights crush some details. Overall, the image is good, and the contrast remains plentiful.

• Ultrawide Lens in Low-Light

Shooting with an ultrawide lens in low light conditions offers some standard shots. The standard photo mode automatically kicks into the Night Mode with an ultrawide lens. The resulting images show no difference between the two modes while shooting at night or in low-lit conditions.

Unlike the other two sensors, the ultrawide lens cannot capture intricate details and shadows. The ultrawide camera can still yield some of the best-looking ultrawide photos. The output shots manage to conserve the exposure and vivid colors. Brightness levels are more than the other two sensors. Overall, the images are still visible and rich with real-to-life colors.

Noise levels are low; sharpness is pleasant, with nice contrast and well-retained highlights. The primary camera is still the champ on the all-new OnePlus 11.

• Portrait Mode

Portrait Mode has always been one of the main highlighting features on the OnePlus smartphones. This mode uses the Hasselblad color science and OnePlus’ expertise in portrait photography. In OnePlus 11 5G, the company is marketing the 2x telephoto lens as the portrait camera.

However, the portrait shots clicked with the main sensor are much better overall. The main camera sensor is capable of capturing more details. Overall, the dynamic range is decent in both cases. The dedicated portrait lens can click better shots in bright and sunny conditions. Edge detection is nearly flawless. Considering the output shots, OnePlus and Hasselblad have done an excellent job with portrait mode this year. However, the main camera still edges out the telephoto lens.

• Selfies on OnePlus 11

OnePlus has improved computational photography with the selfie camera. The selfie camera can produce some nice selfies from the front camera. This year’s selfie camera has the best color-tuning compared to the previous generation models. The highlights are uneven, while the details are plentiful. Furthermore, the exposure is excellent, and the wide dynamic range helps to click some near-to-real-life shots.

If you plan to crop the video using an editor, shooting at 8K resolution will be ideal. On OnePlus 11 5G, I can barely notice some improvements to the 8K video recording. But this is not enough to recommend someone to shoot at 8K resolution.

• 4K videos on OnePlus 11

The 4K video quality from the OnePlus 11 main camera is outstanding. Details are sharp, and colors are near to natural. The White Balance is consistent throughout the video footage. With well-developed shadows, the highlights are retained. There is no noise throughout the video footage in daylight conditions. The dynamic range is wide. Furthermore, the 4k video quality looks identical between 30fps and 60fps footage.

• 1080p videos from Telephoto and Ultrawide Lens

At the same time, the video footage from the telephoto lens looks good. But the telephoto and ultrawide cameras restricts to 1080p video recording. Moreover, the main cameras are more vivid and crisp than the video footage from these lenses. Dynamic range is also either hit or miss. The details in the footage could be better. Both the dynamic range and the contrast levels are good too.

The ultrawide camera footage looks as good as the main camera sensor. The output video gets plenty of details and natural colors. The details in the footage are nice; the contrast is good, with well-developed shadows. Highlights are under control. Overall, the camera does a great job of providing great stabilization to the video while walking through the scene. In my testing, I found the video to be smooth, with no abrupt transitions or panning. Super steady Pro mode takes stabilization to the next level. Although, I did notice some weird jelly effect in the shadows with this mode on.

• Night Videos on OnePlus 11

A shadowy area is evenly poised in the scene. Even in low light, the contrast is well preserved without additional brightening.
