Moto G42: First Impressions

This year the Lenovo-owned smartphone brand, Motorola, is on a spree of launching smartphones. The company has launched multiple mobile phones in India in the last couple of months. The latest smartphone to launch is the brand-new addition to the Moto G Series in India. Furthermore, this smartphone comes as Moto G42, a new 4G mobile phone.

Meanwhile, the all-new Moto G42 will fill the slot between the Moto G22 and the Moto G52. Looking at the record, Motorola’s recent Moto G Series smartphones have also maintained a good balance between the competitive specs and the price.

Latest Moto G42: Phone Unboxing

The budget segment Moto G Series smartphone comes inside a Navy-Blue-themed box packaging. Additionally, the retail box features a big and bold Motorola Logo in white colour. Furthermore, the name of the Moto G42 smartphone is present below this logo in fluorescent colour. The rear side of the box packaging also mentions the vital highlighting features of specs of the latest Moto G series smartphone.

On opening the box packaging, first, we get the Moto G42 mobile unit with a 6.4-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display. Additionally, the protective case is already pre-applied on the smartphone. Below this mobile unit, we also get a section with some paperwork and documentation. Furthermore, there’s a SIM Tray ejection tool. Meanwhile, in bottom section, we get a 20W Motorola Turbo Charge fast charger and a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable for charging and data transfer.

  • Lightweight Moto G Series Phone

The latest Moto G series handset is a lightweight smartphone. Additionally, the Lenovo-owned smartphone brand is highly banking on the Moto G42 design factor. The company also believes that the design of the G42 will make it stand out from its competitors. In our experience, the company has done a pretty good job in design. Meanwhile, the smartphone comes with slim aesthetics and does not weigh much. Also Read – Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 release date in India, specs and price in India

Meanwhile, the Atlantic Green colour unit looks quite distinctive. Additionally, we like the finishing of the smartphone. The acrylic back panel is also decent; the frame also doesn’t get any sharp edges. The fingerprints aren’t also much of an issue on such a rear panel. The Moto G42 smartphone is also comfortable to hold in your hands. The complete design also gets a polycarbonate finish. However, the camera module is built up of metal.

Moto G42: Physical Design

Looking at the physical design, we find the Moto G42 is more attractive. Meanwhile, the power button and the volume rockers are placed on the right side—furthermore, the power button doubles as the side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The buttons on the right side also offer good feedback. Although because of the size, we experienced that the volume buttons are a bit hard to reach. Furthermore, the top-edge gets the 3.5mm headphone jack with a noise cancellation mic.

The bottom-firing stereo speakers also come with Dolby Atmos enhancement. Furthermore, the bottom gets the USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer with the primary microphone. Additionally, the left edge gets the dual-SIM tray with a dedicated microSD card slot.

The rear camera module is raised. Overall, the back panel of the Moto G42 smartphone comes with a distinct design. The camera module also gets a new design with sharper lines. Additionally, the smartphone houses three camera sensors with LED Flash.

  • Moto G42 with AMOLED display

Looking at the display, the latest Moto G Series smartphone also comes with an AMOLED panel. Meanwhile, this display offers punchy colours and sufficient brightness levels. Additionally, the 6.4-inch AMOLED panel gets a Full-HD+ display resolution. But unfortunately, it only supports a 60Hz refresh rate. Also Read – Motorola Moto Edge 30 Pro price in India, specs and camera review

Although, this won’t be a problem for someone already using a phone with a 60Hz screen. A user with a 90Hz screen might also feel a lack of fluidity in the system animations. Scrolling will also be jarring. Considering the price point, 90Hz displays aren’t standard. Thus, making Moto G42 a good offering at this price.

  • Snapdragon processor performance

Performance-wise, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 powering the latest Moto G series handset is also a pretty power-efficient processor. Besides, Motorola’s latest G42 packs in a 5000mAh battery with 20W Turbo Charge fast charge support. Luckily, the company has also bundled this compatible charger in the retail box.

  • 50MP triple rear camera on Moto G42

The triple rear camera setup on the all-new Moto G42 is pretty decent. Additionally, we get a 16MP front-facing selfie camera to click selfies and video calling. The 50MP primary camera can also click some good daylight shots. The 8MP ultra-wide secondary camera is also decent. Meanwhile, the 2MP macro lens performs as usual (we have already seen it on many other Motorola smartphones). The complete camera review for this latest Moto G series smartphone will be published later.

  • Other Features

Regarding other features, the new Moto G42 also gets an IP52 rating for dust and water resistance. Furthermore, there is a capacitive fingerprint sensor inside the power button for device security. The Moto G Series smartphone also sports carrier aggregation, NFC, and FM Radio. One of the critical highlighting factors of this smartphone is also its clean Android experience.

  • Clean and Pure Android experience

Meanwhile, the latest Motorola Moto G42 runs on Android 12 with few Motorola customizations like the Moto G52. Additionally, the Lenovo-owned smartphone brand guarantees to offer an upgrade to Android 13. Furthermore, the smartphone makers have also promised to deliver three years of bi-monthly security updates for the latest G Series smartphone.

In terms of user experience, the interface of the latest Moto G42 mobile phone is also clean and decent. Furthermore, the Android 12 interface runs smoothly in day-to-day life. Although, we did notice some stutter in the animations at times. These glitches occur while accessing the notification panel or while switching between apps. But this is a common issue that an Android update from the company can address. Such issues generally persist in smartphones in this price range.

Moto G42: Final Verdict

Meanwhile, the latest Moto G42 phone seems like a decent contender in this price segment. Talking about the long-term usage, Motorola has also promised to offer future updates. Meanwhile, the pleasing design of the handset will attract customers. However, I believe Motorola will struggle to attract buyers to this latest G series smartphone when the Moto G52 is only Rs 500 more expensive.

The current-selling Moto G52 also gets the same specs and features as the G42. But this latest mobile phone outperforms the G42 in a few ways, including a larger pOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a lighter body, and 33W fast charging. The Redmi Note 11 is another strong competitor at this price point, with nearly identical features but a better display and more RAM.
