Vivo X80 Pro: Full Review
With the launch of the Vivo X80 Pro, the Chinese smartphone brand, Vivo could go head-to-head against the two biggest smartphone manufacturers, Samsung and Apple. The latest Vivo X80 Pro mobile phone is the spiritual successor of the last year’s flagship Vivo X70 Pro+. The latest flagship comes with a similar set of specifications and price tag. Additionally, the Vivo X80 Pro gets minor upgrades in terms of hardware. Before getting into the details, first, let’s look at the design of the all-new Vivo X80 Pro smartphone.
Vivo X80: Design
As for the design, the design of the Vivo X80 Pro mobile looks very familiar to the Vivo X70 Pro+ design. The new flagship handset is available in single Cosmic Black color in India, and this color variant has a slight sparkle reflection when exposed to bright light. Looking from the far, the back of the Vivo X80 Pro appears matte black.
The Vivo X80 Pro back panel comes with Fluorite AG Glass. Furthermore, it also gets the Schott Xensation Up scratch protective glass protection on the front display. The display is curved on the sides, which meets the aluminum-alloy frame on the edges. Overall, the matte finishing on the back panel is excellent and rejects fingerprints and smudges. However, with such a design, the Vivo X80 Pro mobile feels a bit slippery in hand. Thankfully, the Chinese smartphone brand also offers a premium faux-leather case inside the box. This case will provide an extensively good grip and a premium in-hand feel.
Vivo X80 Pro: Physical Design
In terms of physical design, the Vivo X80 Pro back panel is where we notice the maximum design changes. The back panel accommodates a large camera window, and the camera module looks similar to the one we have already seen on the iQOO 9 Pro. The camera bump is good enough that it does not cause much wobbling.
The camera module takes the entire width of the back panel. This module’s primary, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens sits inside the circular ring. At the same time, the periscopic telephoto lens is placed just outside the ring. The Vivo X80 Pro mobile still looks unique and exciting, even with the recycled design. The smartphone offers a premium in-hand feel when compared to its competitors.
The flagship Vivo phone has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, just like its predecessor. Furthermore, the curved AMOLED display panel does attract dust and smudges. But these can be wiped off easily. The button and the port placement are precisely the same as the predecessor.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: What’s New?
The addition of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC is the most significant upgrade in the Vivo X80 Pro mobile phone. The same processor is also found in the competitors of the Vivo X80 Pro. We expected Vivo to have added the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC on the latest flagship smartphone. However, the Vivo X80 Pro with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is still a good upgrade over the Vivo X70 Pro+, which comes with Snapdragon 888+.
The company also added a second generation of its V1 imaging chip called the V1 imaging chipset, the V1+. Vivo claims this chip will help in low-light photography, videography, and gaming.
Vivo’s new mobile connectivity
Regarding connectivity, the Vivo X80 Pro includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.2, NFC, and other satellite navigation systems. The handset comes with a sole 255GB storage option which does not support storage expansion. The flagship Vivo mobile phone packs in 4700mAh battery, an upgrade over the 4500mAh capacity of the previous model, the Vivo X70 Pro+. Furthermore, the new flagship charges more quickly with the 80W fast charging adapter. This 80W Vivo Original charger comes inside the retail box.
Regarding display specifications, the Vivo X80 Pro mobile sports a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with WHQD+ resolution. The display comes with 3200*1440 pixels screen resolution. Additionally, it features a 120Hz refresh rate and a 300Hz touch sampling rate.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Software
The latest Vivo X80 Pro mobile runs on Funtouch OS 12, based on Android 12. The company promises to provide the smartphone with three years of Android updates and three years of monthly security updates. It is also good news for the buyers. Considering Vivo’s previous record regarding the Android updates, we expect that this time the company will push the Android 13 update on time for the Vivo X80 Pro.
The Funtouch OS is similar to what we have already seen on the regular Vivo smartphones. Although, the Android 12 adds a certain level of customization. But the overall OS still strongly tastes like Vivo’s Custom skin. However, the OS works flawlessly on the latest smartphone and works well without any hiccups on regular use. Meanwhile, we encountered some software bugs that can be resolved with future software updates.
Funtouch OS: Features
The Funtouch OS gets a new theme engine that matches the colors of the widget and the keyboard to the selected wallpaper. Furthermore, the Chinese smartphone brand has also added a UI color picker, which we saw with many Samsung smartphones running on One UI 4.1. Also Read – Vivo’s latest smartphone price in India
FunTouch OS: Bugs
The Dark Mode on the latest Vivo X80 Pro mobile is a bit buggy. Here, when we switch to black mode, the color of the app drawer changes to black, but the text color on the icons does not switch to White. Thus, making it hard for the users to read the label of the apps.
Besides this, one major problem we faced was the list of pre-installed third-party apps. These apps include MX Takatak, Josh, BYJU’S, Moj, Facebook, etc. Getting unwanted third-party apps on an Rs 80000 Vivo mobile phone is something no customer will ever like. Luckily, we can uninstall these unwanted third-party apps if needed.
Vivo X80 Pro: Display Performance
Vivo X80 Pro mobile sports an E5 AMOLED display capable of producing natural-looking colors. The display on the smartphone is bright enough to handle the direct sunlight whenever outdoors, and the text and images appear sharp. As per our experience, we did not find the curved edges distracting while watching movies or playing games. With LTPO 3.0, Vivo claims that this display will promise to offer better power efficiency. This Vivo mobile phone also offers a variable refresh rate, with 1Hz being the minimum value and 120Hz being the maximum refresh rate.
With regular usage, the display’s refresh rate can vary from 10Hz to 120Hz depending upon the on-screen content or the app. Furthermore, the Smart Switch will enable the display to automatically switch between refresh rates based on the content. Moreover, we can also force the display to run apps at 120Hz all the time. However, it will affect the battery life of the flagship smartphone.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Multimedia
The Vivo X80 Pro mobile also comes with HDR10+ certification and supports some apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. The stereo speakers on the Vivo X80 Pro are enough loud and clear. The Vivid display option on the Vivo X80 Pro offers an ideal condition for watching movies or TV shows.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Authentication
The smartphone also gets a 3D Ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor for security. This fingerprint sensor is a delight to use. Registering the fingerprint took just one single tap. Unlocking the device works flawlessly in our experience. Vivo also offers a Quick Action feature on the flagship mobile phone. This feature lets us launch native or third-party apps the moment we unlock the phone.
The Chinese smartphone brand also offers a two-finger verification system for additional device security. Besides the lock screen, we can also register fingerprints for the authentication of locked and hidden apps. Also Read – Upcoming Vivo Pad tablet, iQOO Tablet, and more
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Benchmark Scores
With Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, we did not face any performance-related issues on the flagship level Vivo X80 Pro mobile phone. Regarding benchmark scores, as expected, the X80 Pro performed exceptionally well. The Vivo phone managed to score 969340 at AnTuTu. At the same time, on Geekbench, the handset got a single-core score of 1236 and a multi-core score of 3631. In benchmark scores, the Vivo X80 Pro easily beats the last year’s flagship Vivo X70 Pro+.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Gaming Performance
In gaming, the Vivo X80 Pro’s performance is also top-notch. The flagship Vivo mobile phone can efficiently run the popular gaming apps of 2022. We played games like Call of Duty: Mobile, BGMI, and Asphalt 9: Legends at the highest settings. In our experience, we did not notice any lag while playing all three graphic-intensive games.
There was no frame drop during the gameplay. While gaming, the Game Interpolation feature worked, which impressed us. While playing Call of Duty: Mobile, we were able to get an average frame rate of above 60fps. During the gameplay, we also checked the battery drop percent, which is relatively low considering the competition in the market.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Battery
During the launch, Vivo claimed that the new X series mobile phone would consume less battery. In our experience, we did not notice any issue with the Vivo X80 Pro battery life. We efficiently managed to get one and a half days of battery life with heavy usage, and the variable and forced refresh rate did not affect battery life negatively.
The latest Vivo X80 Pro mobile phone managed to run for around 16.5 hours during the HD Video loop test. The 80W Vivo charger also impressed us. With an 80W bundled charger, the smartphone could charge itself in just 36 minutes from 0 to 100 percent. The smartphone also supports 50W wireless charging. However, we need to purchase the Vivo Proprietary wireless charging dock separately.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Camera
Like the predecessor, the Vivo X80 Pro mobile phone also comes with a quad rear camera setup with a slightly changed design. The 50MP primary camera uses the customized Samsung GNV sensor in this setup. Meanwhile, this primary camera offers optical image stabilization (OIS). The secondary camera is a 48MP ultra-wide shooter with autofocus. A 2x telephoto portrait camera with Vivo’s gimbal stabilization comes as the third lens. The fourth lens is a 5x periscopic style telephoto camera with OIS. For selfies and video calling, the latest handset comes with a 32MP front camera with a fixed focus system.
The camera interface on the Vivo X series mobile phone looks familiar. The camera app comes with tones of controls and features that are customizable. There is PRO mode support for both photo and video. The flagship Vivo phone also gets a new Astro Mode, which can provide exciting photos.
The primary camera can capture excellent photos with good details and impressive dynamic range. The camera performs exceptionally well in all kinds of lighting conditions. In a low lighting situation, the device performs equally well with reduced noise in the photos. In low lighting conditions, Lens flares and intense glare from bright street lights, neon signs, and other light sources were minimized, allowing for more dynamic range and shadow detail.
Night Mode and Astro Mode
The Vivo X80 Pro mobile can deliver noise-free photos and nearly natural colors with active Night Mode. The Astro Mode is also present on the Pro variant, which is meant to capture the stars in the night sky. This mode also works quite well in the right weather conditions. Remember, the Astro Mode works perfectly when the smartphone is mounted on the tripod. We tried to capture a few shots with this mode by holding our mobile in hand. The photos clicked look equally good, and the noise levels are low with good details.
The captured photos offer excellent details and a good dynamic range with an ultra-wide-angle camera. Surprisingly, there was minimal distortion. However, the photo quality was not the same as the primary camera, especially in a low-lighting situation, even with active Night Mode. It could be down due to the lack of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in the ultra-wide-angle camera. The Vivo X80 Pro can offer some of the best-looking ultra-wide-angle photos.
This ultra-wide-angle camera is also capable of taking macro shots. It can click macro shots at a distance of up to 4cm from the subject. The resulting shots were quite impressive. We liked this camera implementation from the Vivo. Meanwhile, the company skips using a dedicated macro camera. Furthermore, the colors in macro photos were equally impressive. The result from the macro lens is very similar to the results from the primary camera.
Gimbal Stabilization feature
Vivo also adds a gimbal stabilization system to its portrait camera. With this stabilization system, the camera delivers sound output for most of the shots. During the launch event, the brand explains to users to enable this feature while shooting a better low-light portrait. The company claims that with the help of 5-axis gimbal stabilization, the users can click better low-light portrait.
The resulting image from the same camera was excellent in a daylight situation. The edge detection is suitable, along with decent sharpness and details. The colors were a bit saturated in auto mode. In low light conditions, the resulting images were still quite decent, but the photos’ details were softer. We expected the photos to be equally sharp in the low-light conditions also. The Stabilization feature works on average in extreme low light conditions.
The image quality on the telephoto lens was similar to Vivo X70 Pro+. The OIS stabilization on the periscopic camera is quite good. It can click good quality photos at 5x optical zoom in daylight. However, the photos clicked in low light appear to be a little murky. With active Night Mode, the camera sensor can click photos with enough details and dynamic range.
One of the best features of the Vivo X80 Pro camera is that it can click close to reality color tones. The photos captured by all four cameras offer natural color and excellent dynamic range. To click more true-to-life colors from all four cameras, we suggest you enable Zeiss Mode.
Finally, the selfie camera can also capture sharp photos with good details in daylight. The edge detection in Portrait mode was spot on. The dynamic range was also good, and the subject and background were exposed correctly. Moreover, the low-light photography performance was equally good, and the low-light images turned out sharp with natural colors.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Video Performance
The latest flagship Vivo X80 Pro can shoot up to 8K videos at 30fps. The video recording is excellent, with crisp output. The details in the video output are also good, and so is the dynamic range. In our experience, the video output lacks stabilization. Hence, the motion video was a bit jerky. Video recorded in daylight condition at 1080p, and 4K resolution comes out with good details. The contrast levels are also good. The output video has impressive stabilization, especially at a 30fps frame rate. Overall, the 4K video looks the best. It packs in enough details, and the video quality also looks sharp.
HDR 10+ Video
Although, the HDR10+ footage looks a bit oversaturated. HDR10+ feature is only available while shooting a video at 1080p and 4K at a 30fps frame rate. However, in low-light conditions, the details were missing but the noise levels were under control. As per our experience, the AI-enhanced video lacks stabilization. Furthermore, it did not get a steady bitrate.
Vivo X80 Pro also gets “Cinematic Video Style.” This videography feature will automatically blur the subject’s background, thus offering a cinema feel. This feature will work perfectly under good lighting conditions. With the Cinematic Video Style feature, we can only capture video footage at 1080p resolution, and good video footage can be recorded when the subject is in motion. However, edge detection fumbles a lot in some situations while tracking the subject. In our experience, this feature is nowhere close to what Apple Cinematic Video Mode offers.
Vivo X80 Pro mobile: Final Verdict
The all-new X80 Pro does not offer massive upgrades over the Vivo X70 Pro+. The flagship Vivo X70 Pro+ is one of the best smartphones of last year. As per our experience, upgrading to Vivo X80 Pro from X70 Pro+ won’t be a good option. For a new buyer, the Vivo X70 Pro+ under X70 Series is an excellent option to go for. Overall, the X80 Pro is a good premium smartphone for 2022. The key highlights for the X80 Pro include the latest processor, new display technology, and a unique set of camera hardware.
The latest Vivo X80 Pro mobile will give tough competition to the Samsung Galaxy S22+, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the OnePlus 10 Pro. However, if you are on a tight budget, we will suggest you go for the OnePlus 10 Pro, which is also a good option as it offers an impressive set of hardware and cameras for the price. Furthermore, the Apple iPhone 13 is also a good option.
